Why Place Statues in Catholic Churches?

Catholics do not worship idols, but the use of classic marble or bronze catholic statues in Catholic churches has a long history. Because thousands of years ago, people couldn’t read or write. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that ordinary people could read and understand the stories in the Bible for themselves. Then these beautiful sculptures and portraits could help believers to get a good understanding of the stories in the Bible, and the various saints. Therefore, statues, paintings, and stained glass windows are used in churches to visually depict the biblical story and show what the people of that period looked like.
It’s no different today. We have pictures of our grandparents for us to remember them and share their experiences with your children. Many buildings in our nation’s capital have statues of presidents, war heroes, and other important public figures to honor them and preserve their memory. And there are many town squares around the world with a statue of a famous person who once lived in their town to honor them and remember what they look like.
Of course, Jesus, Mary and the other saints are no different from other important public figures in the world today. Catholics have Jesus statues, blessed mother Mary statues, and the saints marble statues in our churches to honor them and preserve their memory. Just as statues of our nation’s presidents and war heroes do.
Catholics often decorate Mary’s statue with roses and flowers in her memory. Sometimes we would sing songs about Mary or carry her statue or picture in the parade. To a casual observer, it would seem that Catholics are worshipping a Our Lady of Mary statue, but this is just one way Catholics show their respect.
Our marble Jesus statues, Mary statues, and other saints statues are the way Catholics honor and maintain their memory through the visual means of our daily lives. As Catholics, we never want the example of Jesus, Mary, and the saints to be lost or forgotten, but to last forever in our hearts and our daily lives.
