What is this sculpture about? This sculpture is called Eros Ben Dart Scripolate (Eros bendato screpolato) or Eros (Eros brosato screpolato). It looked like a fragment of an ancient Monument to the Love god Eros.

Roman mythology is known as Latin and Cupid’s Amor. Eros is the youngest, the most naughty, and the immortal gods are beautiful. In Ancient Greek mythology, Eros was a primitive god of romantic, love and sexual desire.

While travelling, and painting, in Mexico during the early 1970s he became enthralled by Latin American art. “I saw those huge, epic statues,” he recalled in 2013. “It was a sudden inspiration.” Returning to Paris in 1974, he exhibited at Gallery La Hune, for the first time including sculptural works. The success of the show led him to pursue the medium.

The artist’s exhibition in Pompeii was curated by the special superintendency for Pompeii together with Pietrasanta’s Atelier Mitoraj and the Contini Art Gallery, and promoted by the Terzo Pilastro Foundation.

Deeply rooted in the classical tradition, Igor Mitoraj sculpts broken or severed fragments of the male form, with an eye for the theatrical that is grounded in years spent working on set designs and costumes for operas.
