Bronze Statue of Donatello:
Donatello’s David is famous as the first unsupported bronze cast work of the Renaissance. He is also the first free-standing nude male sculpture since antiquity. It depicts David with a mysterious smile. Also, David put his foot on Goliath’s severed head after defeating the giant. We could see that the young man is completely naked save for a laurel wreath hat and a pair of boots, and holds the sword of Goliath.
Furthermore, David seems little aware that the head of his vanquished enemy lies between his feet. And, Goliath’s beard wraps around David’s Sandaled feet, as if the young hero is running his toes through his dead rival’s hair. Goliath wears a winged helmet. David’s right foot rests firmly on the shorter right wing, while the left is much longer, extending from his right leg to his groin. And the feathers lightly covering his calf are so imaginative.
The Bronze David Significance:
A young hero stands with a sword in his hand, and at his feet are the heads of his enemies. Visually, however, the statue is quite different. David was frail and very frail. The head is said to have been inspired by the classical sculptures of Antinous, a favorite of Hadrian’s famed beauty. The physique of the statue is in stark contrast to the great sword in his hand, indicating that David’s victory over Goliath was not based on physical strength, but on God. The boy’s nudity further alludes to the idea of God’s presence, contrasting the young man with the heavily armored man. David was uncircumcised, a convention for male nudity in Italian Renaissance art.
