Marble Statue A River God by Jean-Jacques Caffieri Replica for sale MOKK-547

This Marble Statue A River God depicts the nude god seated holding a rudder and a tub from which a cascade falls. This famous work of art is created by a famous French sculptor Jean-Jacques Caffieri. Caffieri was born in Paris, a sculpture family from Italy who moved to France during the regency of cardinal Mazarin.

The Marble Statue A River God is a naked old man sitting on a urn from which water flows. He has a paddle in his left hand and the edge of the urn in his right hand, with a reed crown on his head and turning to the right. From the beginning of his career, Jean-Jacques Caffieri haD demonstrated a very skilled craftsmanship: less than two years after the approval of the plaster model (July 30, 1757), he presented the marble sculpture as his reception piece, on 28 April 1759.

This highly successful work of art was usually reproduced in terracotta, bronze or marble. In 1785, after his first reception was rejected in 1783, Jean-Joseph Foucou presented a River that closely resembled the work of his master. In 1786, the sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot used it as his inspiration to represent the river god Peneus, in a group of Apollo and Daphne for the Sèvres Manufactory.
