World-renowned artist Tom Corbin is the creator of our gorilla sculpture in Champions Plaza and bronze work in the courtyard of the Kansas Tech Center. He was commissioned to carve a statue of Harry Truman for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC.
The Origin of the Orangutan Statue:
There are thousands of gorilla statues and other statues honoring this endangered species throughout southeastern Kansas. After the gorilla graduated from Pittsburg State University, the gorilla mascot has become a symbol of the campus and surrounding community as alumni hold the gorilla in their hearts. A fun place to learn and grow with pride, poise, and perseverance forms around the orangutan sculpture.
In recent decades, gorillas have been voted one of the most popular mascots at all levels several times. Pittsburgh’s gorilla mascot dates back to 1920 when it was slang for “roughnecks.” The original Gorilla was a motivational club founded by 24 students to inspire college spirit and enthusiasm. Their motto is: “We need vitality, and we always need vitality”. Additionally, gorillas are characterized by strength, intimidation, and wild brutality. That’s exactly what the first Pittsburgh gorillas hoped to portray.
Details of the Gorilla Garden Ornament:
Check out our life-size gorilla garden decorations. This is a sculpture of a crawling gorilla. Our sculpture is so realistic it looks like an adult gorilla. Its eyes looked into the distance, with a serious look on its face. You could imagine what it saw. It’s also a really nice piece of art.
Improve Protection of Gorilla Species:
In an effort to raise awareness and conservation of the critically endangered gorilla species, our artist has created a giant gorilla sculpture. Of course, we have cast one of the largest bronze sculptures of a gorilla in the world, and he could hold two or three people in one hand. In many sculptures, gorillas display empathy and kindness, rather than the “scary” image they are often portrayed in.
Gorillas have Human Traits:
Large animals also have a gentle side to their families. They are loving and obviously very concerned about his family. Our artists cast the sculptures to let the world know that gorillas also have a cute and gentle side. However, they are often misunderstood and considered scary and dangerous animals. Then, through the display of different styles of gorilla sculptures around the world, people could more clearly understand the charm of gorillas and inspire our sympathy and protection for natural creatures.
