Introduction to Darwin’s Apes:
The Darwin Ape statue was originally carved by Hugo Reinhold. Obviously, Darwin’s Ape is a wonderful sculpture and thought-provoking work. The meditation on human skulls is actually an ancient European cultural tradition used by Reinhold in his masterpieces. In Shakespeare’s famous Hamlet graveyard scene, Hamlet raised Yorick’s skull. Shakespeare used this scene to show Hamlet his thoughts on death. But this sculpture is more than just an ape and a skull, there are more.
Hugo Rheinhold’s chimpanzee is a scientist, sitting on a book marked “Darwin” and measuring the human skull he holds with a caliper. At his feet, he opened a bible and tore a page that read “Eritis sicut deus”. This is the first sentence of the snake’s promise to Eve: If you eat the forbidden fruit, “You would be like God Same, knowing good and evil.”
