Exquisite Achilles Bronze Statue Ancient Greece Art for Sale BOK1-456

This bronze 18-foot statue of Achilles was the Greek hero of the Trojan War. This is in memory of soldier and statesman, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. And, the bronze sculpture was installed by order of King George III and unveiled on 18 June 1822. The bronze Achilles statue, located near Queen Elizabeth Gate at Hyde Park Corner, was the first statue installed in Hyde Park. The sculpture was commissioned by the patriotic upper-class society, known as the Ladies of England.

A Monument of History and Controversy:

The statue was made by Sir Richard Westermarkt using 33 tons of bronze from the Cauldron captured by Wellington in the Battle of France. The main body of the bronze statue is modeled after a Roman figure in Monte Cavallo, Italy. The head is based on the Duke himself. The statue was originally completely nude, which caused public outrage, so a small fig leaf had to be added shortly after installation.

The Wellington Monument is a giant statue of Achilles located at the corner of Hyde Park and is one of the iconic statues of London. It was created by Sir Richard Westmacott RA and is the most successful work of the Westmacott dynasty. The statue was meticulously modeled after one of the Roman Dioscuri statues, with the addition of a sword and shield.

Critiques of Achilles Statue Accuracy:

While the short leaf-shaped sword is accurate for ancient Greeks, the shield has been criticized for being too small as Achilles would carry a shield much larger in size, typical of heavily armed infantry. Another indication that Achilles was based on a stone statue is the presence of additional supports on his legs, provided by the breastplate (bulletproof vest) and the cape that falls from Achilles’ left arm. However, a bronze statue would not require such supports as opposed to stone, as a massive stone body would be difficult to support on relatively wide-angled legs.
