The Animals in War Memorial, constructed of Portland stone and cast bronze, spans 58 feet (17.68 m) wide and 55 feet (16.76 m) deep, creating a striking visual impact from both near and far. Its design aims to engage visitors and draw them into the theme.
Animals In War Memorial Detail：
Three main elements signify two distinct levels, separated by a dominating and formidable wall. At the lower level, two bronze pack mules strain forward in an arena, surrounded by the main wall symbolizing wartime experiences. The mules approach a set of steps passing through the wall. On the upper level outside the wall, a bronze horse and a dog stand facing north in the garden, bearing witness to fallen comrades and representing hope for the future.
Within the longer inner wall, shallow reliefs depict images of many different animals used in conflicts of the 20th century. Carved on the outer side of this wall are ghost-like outlines representing animals lost in conflicts. Additionally, inscriptions adorn both sides of the shorter wall section, including the monument’s name and information about war zones and the number of animals lost. The names of major donors are engraved on the outer side of the longer wall.
