This bronze Couch Monster sculpture, a new sculpture by acclaimed contemporary artist Brian Jungen, has been on display since Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at the intersection of Dundas Streets and McCaul Streets. The whole sculpture was cast in high-quality bronze, which is 5.5 meters long and 4 meters high, it looks like some leather pieces were pieced together, and the the overall shape presents an elephant. How Did the Couch Monster Come to Be?
Monumental public art has made Dundas and McCall Streets a Canadian landmark, and this Couch Monster sculpture reaffirms this meeting point of the international art world. Jungen was inspired by the story of Jumbo, a captive circus elephant killed by a train in St. Thomas, Ontario in 1885. In a poetic tribute to the plight of animals in captivity, Jungen crafted second-hand leather furniture into the shape of an elephant, based on discarded furniture he saw piled up on Toronto sidewalks. Completing the piece in bronze is a tribute to British sculptor Henry Moore, and also a material interest in how bronze can, over time, come to resemble leather.
