Chronos Statue- Greek God of Time Art for Sale

This sculpture is Juan Rovira’s depiction of Cronos. The Chronos statue is one of several sculptures surrounding the 2.2-acre Centennial Plaza. In Greek mythology, Kronos was the leader of the Golden Age Titans. He usually carries a scythe, which is the weapon he used to kill his father, Uranus, the leader of the universe. This deity evolved into the modern-day Father Time. Notice here he is holding a snake. This refers to his defeating Ophion and securing the world’s freedom.

Cronus Ambush Uranus:

Kronos is the Greek god of time and the Titan who overthrew his father Uranus. With the help of his mother Gaia, he sneaked into the sleeping place of Uranus and castrated him with a scythe. Kronos takes over as leader of the Titans and the universe. Uranus prophesied that the children of Cronus would overthrow him just as he overthrew his father. Kronos married his sister Rhea and they gave birth to the gods of Olympus.

Cronus, paranoid by his father’s prophecy, devours his own child. Rhea tricked Zeus by hiding him. Zeus grew up in secret and led the army to defeat his father in the battle of the Titans. Kronos was imprisoned in Tartarus for thousands of years.

What is the Symbol of Cronus?

Firstly in this sculpture, there is a snake and secondly, usually, Cronus is accompanied by a sickle. According to ancient Greek standards, snakes were usually a symbol of medicine, fertility, or a messenger representing the underworld. They were largely seen as beings of the underworld of Earth, moving in and out of cracks in the ground and under rocks. In Kronos’ view, the snake may have been related to his role as a general harvest god.

When Uranus went to meet Gaia, Cronus ambushed him and castrated Uranus with a scythe. He then threw the testicles into the sea. Thereafter, Cronus became king of the gods, and he ruled alongside his sister Rhea, who also became his wife. This is also why Cronus is traditionally depicted holding a scythe.

The sickle is best known as an early farm tool, used to harvest wheat and other grains. It references the adamantine sickle given to Kronos by his mother Gaia to castrate and overthrow his father Uranus. Of course, the scythe could be interpreted as the prosperity of the Golden Age ruled by Cronus.
