Saint Anthony was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal. He was born into a wealthy family and by the age of fifteen asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, the then capital of Portugal. During his time in the Abbey, he learned theology and Latin.
Following his ordination to the priesthood, he was named guest master and was responsible for the abbey’s hospitality. When Franciscan friars settled a small hermitage outside Coimbra dedicated to Saint Anthony of Egypt, Fernando felt a longing to join them.
Fernando eventually got permission to leave the monastery so that he could join the new Franciscans decree.
When he was admitted, he changed his name to Anthony. Antony then travelled to Morocco to spread the truth of God, but was very ill and was sent back to Portugal. Blown away on the way back, the party arrived at Sicilia, I. Di, from where they travelled to Tuscany.
After the local monks considered his health, Athony was assigned to the Winter Palace in Sao Paulo. When he recovered, Anthony took time to pray and learn.
After an uncertain period of time, the Dominican monks came to visit the Franciscans and were puzzled as to who would attend the liturgy. Dominicans are known for their preaching, so the Franciscans think they will provide a monk, but the Dominicans think the Franciscan will provide one.
At that time the head of the Franciscans Church asked Anthony what the Holy Spirit told him. Although he tried to oppose it, Anthony conveyed an eloquent and moving attitude that impressed both groups. Soon the news of his eloquence reached Francis of Assisi, who had a strong distrust of the Brotherhood’s commitment to poor life. In Antony, however, he found a friend.
